Nick,
I completely agree with your thoughts about Detroit. Although I did not grow up there, I lived, worked, and went to school there for a few years and really began to appreciate the city, it's rich history, architecture, and people. During our trip back home, I enjoyed watching the view of the river at night and in the morning, the Belle Isle bridge and Canada across the way. I reminisced about when we lived in Indian Village. When we lived there, I got so tired of seeing some of the negative aspects of Detroit - the decaying buildings, trash on the streets, inept political leaders, the cyle of poverty- but, being away from the city and through subsequent visits - I realized what I really enjoy about the city as well as what I dislike about other places where we have lived. In the words of Joni Mitchell all in all it seems to go that you don't know what you've got til its gone!
